A VARIETY OF EVENTS

FIRST: RUN and SHARE April 24 6:45 pm

No, I am neither running nor walking. I am volunteering to help out at the United Way booth. The Corporate Run is an annual affair. Last year there were more than 17,000 total registrants. For more information on how to register, maps, where to line up and what to expect, click here.

SECOND: PLANT and CELEBRATE April 26 10:00 am

An Arbor Day observance will take place at Vice Mayor Robert C. Welsh, Jr. Park, the park next to the Ludlam Elementary School. I hear there are between 15 and 20 trees and plants which are designated to beautify the area. Join the fun of helping to put them in the ground while celebrating South Miami's continuing commitment to green space.

THIRD: RUN/WALK and SHARE MAY 3 7:30 am

This is an outing that is good for people and good for the wildlife that Pelican Harbor Seabird Station rescues, nurtures and releases. This event is described as an "exciting 3.1-mile walk/run [which] supports our vital wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education programs. All proceeds directly benefit these initiatives, while helping raise awareness of our important work in the community. Whether you choose to run or walk, it's a great way to stay active and contribute to a worthy cause!" The course of the race is through Haulover Park:

TAX SEASON

This is my sixth year volunteering to work with the AARP Tax-Aide program. It was a busy season for the team. I worked at four different sites for eleven weeks, a total of 40 shifts. We had fewer volunteers, but - over all - served 11% more people than last year. The accounting at the South Miami Library is:

*Deactivated returns were ones that were started, but could not be filed.

(E-filed returns are completed returns that were electronically submitted to the IRS.)

Because Florida was classified as a disaster zone, the deadline for submitting tax returns and owed taxes is now May 1. The IRS explanation is here. In essence it says: "The deadline to file 2024-2025 taxes or an extension [was] Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Florida taxpayers have an automatic extension until May 1, 2025, due to major storms from the 2024 Hurricane Season that impacted many taxpayers throughout the state."

Keep safe, stay healthy!
